왓 포

왓 포는 태국 방콕에 있는 불교 사원으로 공식적으로 "왓 프라 체투폰 위몬 망클라람 랏차워람아하위한" 또는 간단하게 줄여서 ‘왓 포’라고 한다. 와불이 있어 와불사라고도 하며, 왕궁에 인접한 랏타나꼬씬 지구에 위치한 방콕 프라나콘 구의 불교 사원이다. 아유타야 양식으로 지은 방콕에서 가장 오래된 사원인 동시에 최대 규모를 자랑하는 사원이다. 이 사원은 전통 타이 마사지의 탄생지로도 알려져 있다.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho, also spelled Wat Po, is a Buddhist temple complex in the Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand. It is on Rattanakosin Island, directly south of the Grand Palace. Known also as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, its official name is Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn. The more commonly known name, Wat Pho, is a contraction of its older name Wat Photaram.

와불상

왓 포 사원의 명물은 바로 와불상이다. 사원 내부로 들어서게 되면 높이 15m, 길이 46m의 세계에서 가장 큰 황금 와불상이 팔을 받치고 누워 있다. 부처님이 열반에 들기 직전의 모습을 표현한 것이다. 불상의 발바닥은 진주조개로 정교하게 세공하였는데, 폭5m, 높이 3m에 이르는 발바닥의 자개장식은 삼라만상을 의미한다.

Reclining Buddha

A reclining Buddha is a statue that represents Buddha lying down and is a major iconographic and statuary pattern of Buddhism. It represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, about to enter the parinirvana. He is lying on the right flank, his head resting on a cushion or relying on his right elbow, supporting his head with his hand.
