장보고 (?-846)

장보고는 청해진(전라남도 완도) 출생으로 정확한 출생과 계통은 알 수 없으나 780년대 후반에 태어난 것으로 추정된다. 그는 기골이 장대하였으며 활과 창을 잘 다루는 무인 기질을 타고 났다. 그의 이름 장보고도 활을 잘 쏘는 것과 관련이 있다. 김부식의 《삼국사기》에는 그의 본명을 궁복(弓福) 또는 궁파(弓巴)라고 적고 있다.

Jang Bogo (?-846)

Jang Bogo was a Sillan who rose to prominence in the Later Silla period of Korea as a powerful maritime figure who effectively controlled the Yellow Sea and dominated the trade between Silla, Heian Japan, and Tang China for decades. His impressive fleet of ships was centered in Wando, an island in South Jeolla Province. So influential a figure did Jang become in late Silla politics that he was granted official office as Maritime Commissioner of the Cheonghaejin Garrison and came near to marrying his daughter into the Silla Royal House before his assassination in 846. He was worshipped as a god following his death.

장도 청해진 유적지

완도 청해진 유적은 전라남도 완도군 완도읍에 있는 남북국시대 통일신라의 해군기지 또는 무역기지인 청해진의 성곽터이다. 청해진은 장보고가 828년에 설치한 것으로 장도(將島)에 위치해 있다. 섬 전체가 계단식 성의 형태로 흔적이 남아 있고 해변의 목책과 성 내부에서 당집, 내성문, 외성문, 우물 등의 시설이 발견되었다. 발굴 조사 결과 성은 고대판축기법으로 제작되었으며 해변 목책은 참나무임이 밝혀졌다. 이 유적은 장보고가 서남해안의 해적을 소탕하고, 중국의 산동지방과 일본을 연결한 해상 교역로의 본거지로서 중요한 역사적 유적이다.

Jangdo Cheonghaejin Historical Site

On the coastal waters of Jangjwa-ri, is a flat island called Jangdo (a.k.a. Janggunseom) that looks like an upside down abalone. The distance to Jangdo from village is approximately 180m, and Jangdo can be reached on foot twice a day during low tide. This is a historical site of Cheonghaejin conquered and developed by ChangPoGo, a famous admiral in the unified Silla Dynasty.

장보고 기념관

청해진의 옛 터에 장보고대사의 업적을 기리고 해양 개척정신을 고취시키기 위해 건립된 기념관은 완도가 고향인 장보고 대사의 실체를 한·중·일 삼국의 고고학적 자료와 문헌기록을 통해 증명하고, 해양개척정신을 재조명하는 공간이다. 상설전시는 뿌리/생성/제국/항해 등 4개의 zone으로 분류하여 장보고의 삶과 동북아 해상무역 활동, 해양개척 저인과 그 정신을 계승하여 21세기 신 해양시대 개척의지을 지향하는 메시지를 전달한다.

Chang Pogo Memorial Hall

The Chang Po Go Memorial Hall was constructed to celebrate the achievements and maritime pioneering spirit of Jang Bogo. The hall is an educational tourism space focusing on historical culture. The outside of the building is designed to embody a scene of a moving wave and the wall was covered with natural stonework reminiscent of Cheonghaejin Castle in Jongdo Island. The wetland near the hall is home to reeds and wild flowers every season. There is also a walking path surrounded by various kinds of trees.
