예수는 패권 국가인 로마 제국과 미합중국의 지배적 종교로서 세계 최대 종교가 된 기독교의 중심 인물이자 신앙의 대상으로 예수 그리스도로 호칭되는 인물이다. 기독교는 고대 사회에서 왕을 지칭하는 신의 아들을 자처하다가 처형된 예수를 유일신인 야훼의 아들이자 구약성경에서 예언된 메시아라고 믿는다. 오늘날 상당수 학자들은 예수의 역사적 실존을 인정하지만, 복음서의 역사적 신뢰성과 성경에 묘사된 예수가 역사적 예수를 적절히 반영하는지 여부에 대해서는 의견이 분분하다.
